Trigeminal neuralgia (TN), commonly known as tic douloureux, is a persistent pain illness characterized by intense facial pain that occurs suddenly. It affects the trigeminal nerve, also known as the fifth cranial nerve, which supplies sensation and nerve communication to numerous areas of the head and face. TN is a form of neuropathic pain that is commonly caused by a nerve damage or lesion. The trigeminal nerves are cranial nerves that connect your brain and brain stem to various areas of your brain, head, torso, and neck. Each of your body’s 12 nerves divides to service two sides of your body and brain. Each nerve also has three branches that carry feelings from your top, middle, and lower face. Vibration or touch with the cheek (like when shaving, washing your face, or applying makeup), brushing teeth, eating, drinking, talking, or being exposed to wind can all cause strong pain flashes. The discomfort may be limited to one part of your face or it may spread.
