A clinical doctor who performs image-guided procedures, fully interprets the imaging required to guide and monitor the response of those procedures, and provides pre and post-procedural care for patients who are undergoing image-guided surgery procedures. “Interventional Radiology” (IR) refers to a group of procedures that employ radiological image guidance to precisely target therapy (X-ray fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography [CT], or magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]). The majority of IR therapies are less intrusive alternatives to open and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. Because many IR operations begin with the passage of a needle through the skin to the target, they are frequently referred to as pinhole surgery! An interventional radiologist’s fundamental abilities include diagnostic image interpretation, needle manipulation, and the use of small catheter tubes and wires to traverse around the body under imaging control.
